Why book this lecture

A rare historic insight into a utility prop that has uses across all branches of magic from close-up to stage to mentalism. Informative, interactive and entertaining.

Inside the lecture

Four centuries of magic concealed in a single handkerchief. The remarkable history, hidden secrets and practical applications of the Devil's Handkerchief. After several years of dedicated research, Lee Alex presents an entertaining and surprising lecture devoted entirely to one of magic's most versatile utility props: the Devil's Handkerchief. Combining live performances with rare historical illustrations, original source material and faithful reproduction apparatus, Lee traces the fascinating evolution of this ingenious device from its earliest documented origins to the present day. Discover what a Devil's Handkerchief really is, why it has remained a favourite of professional magicians for centuries, and how to use it to create powerful and deceptive magic that will strengthen your own repertoire. Practical routines and ideas are included for close-up, parlour, stage, mentalism and children's performers alike. Lee also presents his own research into the many forms of the Devil's Handkerchief, sharing modern refinements, construction improvements and practical handling tips developed through years of performance and study. In addition, he introduces new thinking on other classic textile apparatus, including the Van Cleve Gag Bag and Professor Hoffmann's Egg Handkerchief. After this inspiring session, you will never again think of the Devil's Handkerchief as merely a concealed pocket. You will see it as one of the most versatile and deceptive pieces of magical apparatus ever created, and perhaps one you will always carry with you. Comprehensive lecture notes are available as a unique eBook, accessed via a limited-edition pocket square featuring a discreet QR code woven into the design. These collector's items are available for purchase exclusively to lecture attendees. A selection of Lee Alex's original textile creations will also be available for sale following the lecture, including the Invisible Devil (100% light-proof double-pocket Devil's Handkerchief), The Kangaroo (his modern interpretation of the classic Demon Handkerchief), the Devil's Bandana, and other specialist designs.

Members and guests at Leeds Magic Circle were treated to the wonderful lecture, Better the Devil You Know, presented by Lee Alex. Lee's combination of research, history and demonstrations of the various versions of the Devil's Hank provided a fascinating insight into this under-utilised and unassuming prop. Since the lecture our members have provided many compliments about the evening, in particular one member stated that they were now buzzing with ideas of how to incorporate a Devils Hank into their act!
